making art {link up}

“Procrastination is the most common manifestation of Resistance because it’s the easiest to rationalize. We don’t tell ourselves, ‘I’m never going to write my symphony.’ Instead we say, ‘I’m going to write my symphony; I’m just going to start tomorrow.”
-Steven Pressfield, The War of Art
I saw this quote over on Emily Freeman's blog and groaned inwardly. Procrastination is something I excel in. It also happens to be something that gets in the way of pursuing the things I enjoy. Her post was a gentle push and reminder that I can freely pursue and enjoy my creative goals. I think I often sit around waiting for someone to give me permission because it has always been quite difficult for myself to not think of extensive amounts of time spent on creative goals as a selfish thing. I suppose it is because I have placed such an enormous value on relationships and people that I have believed that outweighs spending time doing what I love. It has been an incredibly slow process, but I am beginning to become more free in the creative goals that I have on my heart.

 It has been a very large step for me to break away from the place where I was saying, "I would like to make art." to the place I am just now finding my home in by declaring, "I will make art."

My two current endeavors are:

1. Songwriting: Solidifying the songs I have already composed and making goals to really grow in my own style and create a list of more songs with themes that are near to the hearts of those who are hurting and seeking healing.

2. Writing a book: my first attempt at telling my story; grief, freedom, and grace. A sort of creative nonfiction account of life experiences I have walked through, but shared in an unexpected way.

I have a long road ahead of me in these pursuits, which will require growing in discipline and focus, but I sense a renewed vision in narrowing down my focus to these two things which are always on my mind. I am a procrastinating multi-tasker who has to be sat down and told to FOCUS or else I never accomplish anything. ha!

  1. Yes! DO THESE NOW! haha I am so happy and I pray you follow these pursuits to their fruit in 2014! I think by having a job in your new place you WILL experience the need to use free time more wisely and I think you will actually find yourself getting MORE done, not less. At any rate, I am waiting to see what you can do! :-)
